Why Gossip Girl's Blair Waldorf is my role model. A letter to my teacher.
WARNING: THIS POST IS LONG, SPOILER-FILLED AND REPETITIVE.
My teacher started to watch Gossip Girl at my recommendation. She came into the show knowing BW was my role model and a massive inspiration. If you have only watched season 1 of Gossip girl, you probably think that Blair is a total bitch and really questioning my role model choices. We all make bad choices and we all grow up, like Blair and Chuck both did.
Okay, I do know that she is technically, quoting from hercampus.com, textbook white privilege but she is definitely the perfect example of getting what you want by working for it. Most of the time, she hardly relies on her wealth. According to her, fate does not exist and you get what you want from hard work. So, my teacher, when I said I want to be Blair, I meant I want to participate in shaping my own future. I set my goals high and achieve.
Blair is also one of the most independent women in today. Blair tells Chuck she loves him but won't be with him until he says it. In season 6 she fights to be just known as Chuck Bass's wife. She waits and fights until she's success herself so its Blair Waldorf not Mrs Chuck Bass. So, my teacher, when I say I want to be Blair, I mean I want to be successful and my own person with or without a man.
She is timeless. Like my other idol, Audrey Hepburn. She shows her best self and has the most beautiful clothes. She showed me, I don't have to dress at all revealingly to get my style noticed and accepted. So, my teacher, when I say I want to be Blair, I mean I want to wear sundresses and bright tights rather that tiny croptops.
She taught me that I'm not anyone, I'm me. Obviously Blair has insecurities because she is like everyone else. I love her schemes, I have admit, and Blair knows thats her flaw. She holds her head high, Blair Waldorf is a fashion icon, a determined leader and a manipulative schemer. So, my teacher, when I say I want to be Blair, I mean I want to accept myself and be confident.
I'm going to have to quote Dan Humphrey here. (Am I seriously the only person who shipped Blair x Dan?) "That girl (Blair) is fiercely strong. Independent. Outspoken. Beautiful. Capable of anything...and no man or magazine should be able to take that away from her."
I know most people en watching GG for the first time are Team Serena (me included, I regret to say). In season two Blair says to Serena; "I'm sick of looking like Darth Vader next to Sunshine Barbie. I guess she kinda is but she does, quoting theoddessyonline.com, have a heart of gold. And is always standing up for Serena, Chuck and Nate. And for small amounts of time, Dan and Jenny Humphrey. She will NOT take no for an answer and won't let anyone stand in her way.
That is why I love Blair. Serena's okay, and don't get me wrong, I love Blake Lively. Blair Waldorf, is always there for her friends. Also, she turned Chuck Bass from this:

To this:

3 words, 8 letters, say it and I'm yours.
